Acrylic paint is a recent development in artistic painting. The first acrylic paints for artists were developed in the 1930's and advances continued to be achieved through the 60's when there was finally a definite wide spread acceptance of the acrylic artist's colors. Artists had sought a medium that was not as toxic as oil and also one that would dry faster, thereby allowing certain techniques like dry brush and translucent layers to be easily and quickly executed. The major difference between acrylic and oil paint is that acrylic is water miscible, which allows it dries much faster that oil, and yet when acrylic dries it is impervious to water.
