Drawing. Generally an artist uses some kind of dry material, such as charcoal, conté, pastel, pencil, etc, to draw on some surface usually paper but it could be anything: wood, board, fabric, etc. As with all mediums, an artist chooses which kind of materials and their combination based on what kind of effect he or she is looking to achieve. A drawing can be a finished piece of art or an idea to be executed.

Dwyer, Charles Jr.

Dwyer is extremely spontaneous in his drawings, he lets the artwork tell him where to go rather than tell the art where it should go, so basically nothing is planned. He starts by creating colored abstract backgrounds, than collages images he has cut out from magazines of the 30's and 50's. This is the point where he uses the pastel, letting the figure emerge from the abstracted background as he draws.
